Val Scura ski mountaineering at Sassongher

At 2665 metres, the summit of Sassongher is the peak that dominates Corvara, an enchanting village in Val Badia. Valscura is a very long a spectacular couloir that neatly vertically cuts this peak and in winter becomes one of the most beautiful and rewarding descent in the Dolomites.

For the fans of steep ski mountaineering, the Val Scura couloir descent is an unmissable experience. A perfect line through the rocks, all skiable for 800 metres of descent.

A ski mountaineering excursion to undertake only with very safe snow conditions, especially due to the steep slopes that requires the use of crampons and axe.

We start in Corvara taking the cable lift to the little village of Colfosco the starting point of the Val Scura ski mountaineering excursion at Sassongher.

We start ascending the slopes to the bottom of Sassongher with the ski. Then we continue on steeper slopes with crampons and axe. Once we reach the Sassongher pass at 2435 metres, we keep ascending towards the peak until we can see the start of the couloir.

We can ski down the entire couloir which does not present any special difficulties, other that for the need to abseil for 20 metres at the end of this very rewarding descent.

In order to get back to Corvara we turn left and skiing through the wood we get to the first building of Corvara.
