Information about the Via Ferrata Gianni Aglio
This itinerary shares its first part with another path, the Via Ferrata Olivieri, then it turns towards the peak Punta Aglio. You will ascend a weather-beaten, overhanging traverse that leads you above the Bus de Tofana, a peculiar, natural hole in the rock face, from where it is possible to start descending towards the hut Rifugio Dibona. The via ferrata continues on the south face of the cliff, then it heads northwards again and, passing easy pitches of perfect rock, it reaches the summit of Tofana di Mezzo (3242 metres a.s.l.).
We advise you to embark on this excursion only under good and stable weather conditions, as the whole itinerary is above 2900 metres a.s.l.. At the beginning of the season it is possible to still find ice and snow on the trail.
The Via Ferrata Gianni Aglio is reachable by taking the Freccia nel Cielo cable car. You will need to take the cableway for the descent as well, thus it is important to bear in mind that the last ride to Cortina is at 16.50 from Cima and at 17.00 from Ra Valles. If you are willing to combine Ferrata Olivieri and Ferrata Gianni Aglio, the starting point of your excursion will be either the mountain hut Rifugio Pomedes or the Rifugio Dibona.
The time required to complete the Ferrata Gianni Aglio is approximately two hours, while the excursion overall duration time is three hours and a half. The via ferrata elevation gain is 350 metres, while the excursion total elevation gain is 800 metres.
The mountain huts along the path and nearby offering facilities and food are the following:
- Rifugio Ra Valles
- Rifugio Cima Tofana
- Rifugio Pomedes
- Rifugio Duca D'Aosta
- Rifugio Dibona
- Rifugio Giussani
