Val di Mezdì Off-Piste Skiing at the Sella Group

Many people describe the Val di Mezdì as the Vallée Blanche, i.e. White Valley, of the Dolomites. But instead of skiing down the wide glacier in the French Alps we descend along a spectacular Dolomitic valley, among 500 meters tall rocky walls overlooking on both sides a deep 12 kilometers valley. The descent of Val di Mezdì cuts the Sella mountain South to North.

Due to its beauty and short distance, Val di Mezdì is a very popular off-piste itinerary. At times it almost becomes a groomed trail. Being a freeride run anyway, unchecked and unmonitored, it needs to be tackled carefully, above all in case of fog or poor visibility.

Information on the off-piste excursion in Val di Mezdì at the Sella

From Corvara we take the Sellaronda lift system, taking us to Arabba then to the Pordoi Pass. By cable car we go up to Sass Pordoi at 2950 meters, the most panoramic overlook in the Dolomites, offering a spectacular view of the Marmolada, Sasso Lungo, Monte Pelmo, the Tofane and the Antelao, a long stretch away.

From Rifugio Maria we ski down to Forcella Pordoi and we continue on a long diagonal reaching the foot of the rocky Piz Boè. Keeping a diagonal, we reach the Rifugio Boè where a steep couloir starts descending the long Val di Mezdì.

The valley is beautiful and not challenging, except in the final section, which is steep and narrow, until we catch up the slopes in Corvara.
