Ski Mountaineering on Gran Sasso to Corno Grande

Gran Sasso is a unique dolomite peak in the middle of Central Italy’s Apennine mountain range and offers a wide range of ski mountaineering excursions.

There are two ski mountaineering main options to climb to the top of the highest and most spectacular summit, that of Corno Grande. Both require a good level of fitness and ski mountaineering and climbing technique.

The ascent to summit ridge up to the 2912 metres offer strong emotions along with outstanding views. The ascent from the ski resort of Prati di Tivo also allows to set foot on the Calderone, Europe’s most southern glacier.

From the summit, the views stretch all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

Skiing down is thrilling and very often on very stable snow.

Information about the ski mountaineering on Gran Sasso to Corno Grande

One Gran Sasso ski mountaineering variant starts from Prati di Tivo, climbing up on the side of Corno Piccolo, through the Franchetti’s Shelter, through the Calderone’s glacier up to the final summit ridge.

A more technical variant, known as the "Direttissima" or "Traversata Alta", starts form the ski resort of Campo Imperatore.

There are also two main variants for skiing down both starting just below the summit. One can either follow the same route up from Prati di Tivo or, still returning to Prati di Tivo, through the steep but wide "Bissolati" couloir.

Technical information about the Gran Sasso ski mountaineering: Direttissima o Traversata Alta

Starting point: Campo Imperatore (at the top of the cableway) and returning to Prati di Tivo. Skiing down the "Bissolati" couloir, by climbing up 20 minutes one could go back to Campo Imperatore

Descent 1500 metres to Prati di Tivo or 1000 metres, if returning to Campo Imperatore
Exposure ascent: south; descent: south through the "Bissolati" couloir or north if descending to Prati di Tivo through the Calderone’s glacier
Grade: challenging
