Snowshoe Excursion to Col dei Bois

Col dei Bois Mountain is located within the perimeter of the Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites. It is known for the bloody battles fought between the Italian and Habsburg armies in World War I.

In this specific area you can find many chamois who can be seen along the sunny slopes of the surrounding mountains, especially during the winter season. From the summit marked by a wooden cross wrapped in barbed wire, you can immediately spot the beautiful Val Travenanzes slowly winding down towards Cortina, skirting the Tofanas' vertical faces. Looking south you can see the spiky peaks of Croda da Lago, Pelmo, and Marmolada, the Queen of the Dolomites, reaching 3343 meters.

An interesting excursion from the naturalistic, as well as historical and lanscape standpoint, quite varied with wide open spaces where the eye can reach far in the distance.

The starting point is the old Waterway Management building located just below Passo Falzarego on the Cortina side.

After putting on our snowshoes, we enter a nice red spruce forest, follow trail #412 leading to the mule track trail dating back to WWI. We follow the mule track for about 100 meters until we can catch a glimpse of a tunnel that sometimes is almost buried in snow. Once we leave the tunnel behind, we proceed on solidly set and safe snow until we reach the Col dei Bois pass at 2331 meters. Then we reach the summit at 2559 meters on gentle snowy slopes.

We climb down from the summit going south, overtaking a rocky section in order to reach a wide and spacious ledge that takes us evenly down to the Col dei Bois pass. From the pass we follow our upward trail.
